  • A talk by art historian Desanka Rowell

'We all feel as if we are sitting on a volcano' (Ernst Barlach)

Image: Paul Klee 'Sennechio' 1922, Kunstmuseum Basel

This illustrated talk will explore the work of three artists, Ernst Barlach, a sculptor, and two painters, Emil Nolde and Paul Klee, all of whom for reasons of propaganda were condemned by the Nazis to exhibit in the 1937 'Degenerate Art' Exhibition in Munich. Their work reveals their unique creative and imaginative powers which were in complete opposition to the Nazis art programme
