A Succulent Theatre production
NASTY: 'big' girls being gross, mean and sexy
in association with Harlow Playhouse
Do you remember that time you pooed yourself in public? How about all those times you swore at your mum for asking you to tidy your pigsty of a room? Maybe you’re still blushing over the time someone pointed out your cellulite when you were getting changed for P.E. in year 11. The Nasty Girls are here to tell you about all their angriest, grossest and most shameful moments in full, uncensored detail. This autobiographical, confessional piece of theatre explores the hidden side of what it means to be a woman. SURPRISE! They’re just people. And people are pretty gross. Witness real-life theatre about what it felt like for two chubby girls who grew up in the thigh-gap worshipping, fart denying, skinny tea-peddling dumpster fire that was the 2010s. Through the use of monologues, duologues, movement and music, NASTY examines a range of different thoughts and fears about real-life experiences as women with regards to body image and bad habits. Breaking away from patriarchal notions of ‘femininity’ and normalising how women feel situated in their bodies and all its accompanying functions, is something that traditionally is not publicly discussed. NASTY wants to challenge that notion.

Check out our website to read some reviews! We are a feminist, queer theatre company, comprised of three female emerging artists; Amy Stephenson-Yankuba and Rio Montana Topley and Katja de La Fuente. Amy and Rio met at The University of Essex studying BA Drama in 2016. They went on to complete their MA in Theatre Practice together in 2020 and this is where the first version of ‘NASTY’ was born. Kat, who went to school with Amy, joined the project as a Producer in early 2021, and made the company a trio. Our debut show “NASTY: ‘big’ girls being gross, mean and sexy“ premiered (in the flesh) in 2021 at Camden People's Theatre, during the pandemic. We have since performed in London, Norwich, Edinburgh and Colchester. All three are passionate about autobiographical theatre and in building its place in the industry as a beautiful and meaningful style of connecting with practitioners, audiences and, well, people.Lucky enough to be picked up at Edinburgh Fringe 2022 by none other than Nathan Stickley (Head of Programming, Harlow Playhouse), we established a co-producing partnership and have been on an upwards trajectory since then.
